Thomas Thabane has announced he is stepping down as Prime Minister of Lesotho. His resignation comes as he is being investigated for the murder of his wife Lipolelo.
Thabane made the announcement while addressing his constituency Ha Abia. He is however staying as the leader of All Basotho Convention (ABC) party although he is leaving a government position.
The deputy leader of new coalition partner the Democratic Congress (DC), Motlalentoa Letsosa, said that the state council had accepted the nomination of Moeketsi Majoro as the new prime minister and he’ll be sworn in on Tuesday.
The Democratic Congress have an agreement with Thabane’s ABC to form a government of national unity that will succeed the current government.
Thabani is facing a murder case of his deceased wife Lipolelo Thabane who was shot and killed two days before the swearing in ceremony of his husband. Thabane’s current wife Maesiah Thabane is also accused of the same murder case.
He has been facing pressure to resign from within his own party. The government is yet to comment on the announcement made by Thabane.
