LESOTHO has confirmed recording its first COVID 19 case today becoming the last country in Africa to be affected by the virus.
The country had not recorded any novel Coronavirus since the outbreak of the virus a few months ago.
Lesotho’s health ministry confirmed that it has carried out 81 tests for Coronavirus from South African travelers as well as those from Saudi Arabia which resulted in one testing positive.
The positive case was part of a total of 301 tests conducted in the country.
COVID 19 has hit Lesotho at a time of political hesitation with the Prime Minister Mr Thomas Thabane set to step down by the end of the coming week following the collapse of his alliance in Parlaiment.
Mr Thabane’s exit would clear the way for a resolution to the political demise that blew up late last year when the prime minister and his spouse were suspected by the police of killing his estranged wife nearly three years ago.
However, they both deny the allegations.
It is not clear on then Mr Thabane will leave his office even though the Parliament has temporarily named the minister of finance Mr Moeketsi Majoro as his replacement.
Currently, Africa has 69,764 confirmed cases of Coronavirus with 2 421 deaths and 23 857 recoveries.
Lesotho is settled in a South African mountain range and it was the only country in Southern Africa which had not recorded any cases of Corona virus until today.
The country has a total population of just above two million people of which 34.17 percent of the population lives in urban areas while 65.83 percent lives in rural areas.
Half of the total urban population lives in Maseru which is Lesotho’s capital city.
