Ladysmith prison officers have been suspended after losing or misplacing prison master keys. They keys which are able to unlock all prison cells disappeared and to date have not been found.
The prison officials went through “operation find keys” which saw the whole prison turned upside down but failed to locate the missing master keys.
Ladysmith Prison is home to more than 700 prisoners.
An investigation by senior officials has led to several prison officials being suspended, and according to Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo has made promising progress.
Due to the risk of prison escape, the prison replaced all the locks. Nxumalo revealed that the department of correctional services use their own trained artisans to replace prison locks and produce other set of keys.
“Due to the risk of prison break, we have replaced all the locks with new set of keys. Through our internal trained human resources we managed to pull out with minimum costs. Prisoner and community safety is our priority,” he said.
