Dr Kaizer Motaung, the chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, the Soweto giants Amakhosi, suggested that he will soon step down from his role in the club. He made the announcement during a lunch with the club’s legends and the media at the FNB stadium, where he celebrated his induction into the South African Hall Of Fame.
He said that he had passed on the responsibility of running the club to his children, who he trusted to take it to new heights. He said: “I have now given over the baton to them to continue the journey, so it is the responsibility on their shoulders.”
“And I can only stand on the wayside and support them in whatever way they would like to do, to support their initiative to ensure that this brand continues to grow by leaps and bounds,” he added. The club, which was founded by Motaung Sr in 1970, is one of the most successful and popular clubs in Africa, despite its recent struggles. Motaung Sr, who has been the club’s chairman for over 50 years, asked the fans to be patient with the club as it undergoes a rebuilding phase.
“I can only say to my fans, thank you very much for the support over the years and continue supporting the team that you so much love and a little bit of patience will do us a great deal of help,” he added. Motaung Sr has also been involved in various boards in South African football, such as:
