The rapper and TV host Jub-Jub, whose real name is Molemo Maarohanye, is facing charges of rape, attempted murder, and assault in a Johannesburg court. He surrendered to the Brixton police on Thursday after they issued a warrant for his arrest. The case will be heard on Thursday in the magistrate’s court, according to Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
“Police can confirm that a well-known rapper handed himself over to the police in Brixton on Thursday, 27 July 2023, after a warrant of arrest was issued against him,” he said.
“He is expected to appear before the Johannesburg magistrate’s court today facing charges of rape, attempted murder and assault,”
It is not clear how and when the rapper, known for his popular Moja Love show Uyajola 99, committed the offences.
Police sources close to the investigation revealed that Jub Jub’s arrest emanates from a case opened by a well-known celebrity and TV star.
“The matter has been under investigation and after the docket was taken to the NPA for a decision, a decision was taken that the suspect needed to be arrested,” said a police officer who refused to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
“After getting a tip-off that he was wanted by the police, he decided to hand himself in.
“After police were satisfied that there was a strong case against the suspect, the NPA took a decision to prosecute.”
