Johannesburg not ready for Lockdown Level 3 – Mayor Geoff Makhubo
President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed that most parts of the country will move to Lockdown Level 3, a stage with more relaxed regulations.
In his national address, the president said that statistically most regions managed to flatten the Covid-19 infections curve hence the need to increase economic activity.
Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo is worried about the spread of the virus especially in the high density townships.
Makhubo revealed that Johannesburg is not ready to move to more relaxed lockdown level 3.
The City of Johannesburg presented a COVID-19 response plan to Parliament’s Co-operative Governance committee.
Most of Johannesburg cases are concentrated in Alexandra, Wynberg, Sandton, Orange grove, Houghton.
74 percent of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Gauteng have recovered, 24 percent of cases are active while 1.1 percent of cases have been fatal.
Gauteng has performed 33 percent of all the tests conducted in the country.
On Thursday, Gauteng premier David Makhura said while Johannesburg remains the epicentre of infections in Gauteng, townships are now a concern.
