Joburg South Africa ‘kaffir’ woman arrested: The Johannesburg woman who shouted abusive words ‘kaffir’ to another woman has been arrested, SAPS has confirmed. The woman was involved in an altercation at an accident scene.
Police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo has confirmed the Joburg woman who shouted ‘kaffir’ has been arrested in Florida and is set to appear in court tomorrow.
The incident happened in Johannesburg. The two women had a minor accident and an altercation started.
The women could be heard threatening each other whilst filming the argument on their smartphones.
People have been sentenced of racism before in South Africa. In 2018, A man was sentenced to R50,000 fine or 2-year prison term after a video that went viral. Adam Catzavelos was charged after using a derogatory word used to describe black South Africans during the country’s racist system of apartheid that ended in 1994. By using the ‘kaffir’ word, the South African woman is most likely to be convicted in the Joburg court on Friday.
Racism has been a problem in South Africa since the country was colonised by white minority rule. The country entered another phase of Apartheid which was a system of racial segregation supported by the government. The words such as kaffir were allowed to be used. After apartheid was abolished, the country entered another phase of anti-white hate speech and also continued racism in some parts of the country.
Various political groupings in South Africa notably the Economic Freedom Fighters and the African National Congress have previously spoke against racism in thee country. South Africa remains the most unequal nation in the world with the widest gap between the rich and the poor.
