Job Sikhala To Spend Weekend In Remand Prison
MDC Alliance deputy chair and Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala will spend the rest of the weekend in remand prison.
Sikhala was remanded to Monday on charges of incitement of public violence.
There was drama on Saturday after Jeremiah Bamu who was representing Sikhala together with Eric Matinenga, was arrested outside Harare Magistrates Courthouse.
He was released and returned to Rottenrow to represent his client.
Sikhala was arrested in Tynwald, Harare on Friday after several days of evading law enforcement agencies who were keen to interview him.
He was one of the opposition activists who had been in hiding as police sought to question them on their roles in the demonstrations that had been planned for July 31.
Other opposition figures that the Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Law and Order Department has expressed interest in interviewing include Makomborero Haruzivishe, Godfrey Kurauone, Ostallos Siziba, Promise Mkwananzi, Denford Ngadziore, Allan Moyo, Obert Musaraure, Jimmy Kunaka, Peter Mutasa, Robson Chere, Stephen Chuma, and Godfrey Tsenengamu.
The bulk of the politicians are from MDC Alliance, while Mutasa is the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president. Masaraure leads the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ).
Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume have since been arrested and appeared in court on charges of inciting public violence.
Sikhala is the latest person to be charged with incitement to commit public violence after several people were arrested in July and early August and charged for allegedly urging people to protest on 31 July & for demonstrating on the same day demanding an end to corruption.
He is being charged with incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187(1)(a) as read with section 36(1)(a) of the Code alternatively incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187(1)(b) of the Code as read with section 36(1)(b) of Code.
