2020 ended badly for the Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goal keeper, Itumeleng Khune, as he lost favour from being number 1 choice of goalkeeper. Could this be the end of the road for the goalkeeper?
With only 8 appearances this season, Khune hasn’t had the greatest season with some notable mistakes that have seen him fall from grace. Khune lost his first choice status to Daniel Akpeyi. The goalkeeper began the season with a number of mistakes that proved costly to Chiefs. He is yet to keep a clean sheet this season. His last match was in the DStv Premiership when Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to SuperSport United in December. Since then he hasn’t even made the bench and has been on the sidelines. With Chiefs preparing to face First Division Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup last-32 at FNB Stadium on Sunday‚ Hunt was asked to clarify Khune’s place in the team. Safe to say the door to the return of the goalkeeper is not closed.
“He’s very important‚ knowing that we’ve got someone of that calibre pushing to get into the team. So he’s very important. He’s like any other player‚ he’s got to work hard. There’s no entitlement to a position at a club anywhere. So he’s working hard. He’s doing well. And when his chance comes again hopefully he grabs it. That’s the only thing I can say on the situation.” he said.
The goalkeeper is hard at work and Kaizer Chiefs can hope to see him before the end of the season hopefully.
Kaizer Chiefs run in the premiership hasn’t been easy. They began the season with only one win in nine matches. Things improved when they went into a run of three wins and two draws before the Soweto derby on Saturday that they lost. A saved penalty from Samir Nurkovic was at the heart of the defeat.
