A few weeks ago Scandal revolutionised the entertainment industry when it introduced Mzansi first-ever deaf star actor to our screens. We can all agree that Scandal pulled a shocker that wowed Mzansi. The etv’s hit soapie late last week introduced for the first time in the history of South African soapie, its first deaf actor.
Mzansi was more than impressed and the fast-rising star Mxolisi Nodom who plays Thando is nailing his role. This is the much-needed change Mzansi was waiting for and it came when we all least expected it.
With several seasoned drama series like Uzalo bringing in seasoned and influential actors to bolster their casts Scandal did the direct opposite and its a bargain.
The move is seen as the first step in lifting hope for the talented disabled looking to begin their career in acting. Well, it might not that big-money move but Scandal! impressed a lot of social media users the day it revealed that it was bringing up a new actor.
Thando was introduced to the etv’s soapie as Violetta’s deaf brother who comes looking for his dead sister whom she hasn’t heard from for a while. Violetta (played by Cindy Mahlangu) was shot dead in a scuffle with her estranged boyfriend Simo. She was involved in a cheating scandal with her husbands (Mbamba) wingman and accountant Simo.

Despite debuting last week Thando is causing all troubles to Mamba and he needs answers. Well, he is pushing the feared thug and business mogul to the limits we can all agree to that. He is already challenging his sister’s nemesis, Mamba, who everyone is afraid of.
Of late shows have introduced expects in sign languages as deaf characters on shows to play deaf. Well, that’s not the case with Scandal’s new fast-rising star actor Mxolisi Nodom.
The new face of the show Mxolisi Nodom comes from Kimberly in the Northern Cape. He was born deaf. Before his thrust into the limelight with the Scandal gig, Mxolisi was involved with Zwakala, an art competition for the deaf.
After learning about Scandal’s auditions the fast-rising actor had to send a series of video clips to the showrunners since he was not in Joburg at the time. Fortune favours the bold he was called in for auditions and the rest was history.
However, he has opened up about his new gig and hopes it will open more doors for those with disability. He hopes this will open doors for more deaf people to be involved and showcase their talents on big stages like Scandal and other entertainment gigs.
