In Pictures, Uzalo actress Nonka ‘Thuthuka Mthembu’ speaks about how she got injured onscreen while running away from a dog.
Thuthuka Mthembu, who plays the role of Nonka on Uzalo, details how she got injured while shooting a dog chase scene.
Though she revealed that Rudy, the German shepherd dog, is trained to handle such situations, Nonka had to conquer her fear of dogs for weeks before accepting the scene. She finished the set with a bleeding knee and jokingly considered claiming reparations from Uzalo producers.

After seeing her dream of sitting in the Bhebhe distillery board meeting going into the drain when Sbonelo lost control of the distillery, Nonka had to put food on the table. Hard times are looming for Nonka, with Lily battling for life on the death bed, Njeza in jail and MaDongwe struggling to pay debts.
She turned to door – door selling of beauty products, that’s when she had an encounter with a dog which chased her down the street where she fell and got real injuries. Sbonelo helped Nonka despite initially being hostile; she blames him for all the bad luck happening in her life.
Speaking on social media, Nonka revealed that she prayed many prayers the week before the scene.
“Though the outcome tells an entirely different story, this was the reality. But this wasn’t because I had it all together, but simply because Rudy (the dog) is an absolute sweetheart. So well trained, I prayed many prayers the week before the scene. I did a lot of bargaining with the DOP & CD on cheating the scene. I think I can say I conquered a fear that day.”
Despite an initial seat back, Nonka is set to make a huge sale which will change her business fortunes for a while till she loses her business money to robbers.
