Having grown up in a Christian community where he was judged for his sexuality Nakhane never let that stop him. After moving from South Africa, the singer, actor, and novelist has reached great heights in his career. Nakhane debuts as an International actor after landing a role in a British feature film called Ear to Eye.
The movie Ear to Eye premiered back in October 2021 at the London Film Festival. The film even started streaming the same day it premiered on 16 October. The play is based on a play by Debbie Tucker Green of the same name. The film had a star-studded cast which included Lashana Lynch, Carmen Munroe, Tosin Cole, only to mention a few. Debbie Tucker directs the film while Fiona Lamptey produces it. The film is distributed by BBC film.
Nakhane took to their Instagram to post pictures of them at the movie’s premiere. This is nakhane’s first-ever International role in a film. The Capetown born actor and singer’s acting career has not been a smooth one as they once received a lot of public backlash because of a role in a film.
Nakhane is starring in a British movie Ear to Eye
In 2017 John Trengove asked Nakhane if they could make music for his film Inxeba (The Wound). When they met, Trengove asked Nakhane if they could audition for the lead role of Xolani, who is a factory worker. His role had to deal with Ulwaluko, a Xhosa initiation into manhood which personally they had done at 20 years of age.
The film that was initially classified as 16LS was changed to X18. The movies attracted a lot of protests and vandalism as a response from South Africans, so many cinemas cancelled their screenings. Nakhane wrote on Homophobic behaviour and refused to live in shame in response to all this. They had to move to Europe, and they confessed that times were rough for him in Mzansi and the death threats that kept coming made it hard for them to return home.
Despite the backlash, the movie opened a door of recognition for Nakhane. They won four awards for their role in Inxeba, and the Hollywood Reporter called their performance an impressive screen debut. He was cast as Jairo in Anthem: Homunculus, a podcast musical after watching Inxeba and listening to their music.
