Winter is here, or maybe too early; legendary actress Connie Chiume who plays the role of MaSonto Molefe on Gomora Mzansi Magic telenovela, shows off her outfit for the coming cold season. The well-travelled actress Connie, who played a role as Mining Tribe Elder in the Marvel Studios film Black Panther, quickly became a fashion influencer with viral outfit images.

On Gomora, MaSonto is the patriarchy of the Molefe family who pays no attention to fashion. Always donning her signature slack and loose tops, is MaSonto becoming an off-screen fashion icon?

She plays a tough single mother who turned into a gangster to provide for her family.

MaSonto lives with her daughters and Thathi and Pretty in Gomora Township; a highly feared personality, she quickly turns to her short gun to enforce her emotions.

Over the Gomora storyline, MaSonto was haunted by the guilt of having her son-in-law killed by her car high jacking syndicate. She later confessed her crime to Mbongeni Ndaba’s parents, who shockingly forgave her.

Connie was born on (born 5 June 1952) in Welkom, Free State Province, to a Malawian father and a South African mother. She completed her matric in Eastern Cape, studied and graduated with a degree in Teaching in 1976; she taught in government schools for 11 years before moving to Greece, where she had a brief stay.

On her return to South Africa, the educationist Connie Chiume landed a role on Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, where she played Thembi. She became famous when she played Stella Moloi in SABC 1 drama series Zone 14, winning a SAFTA Award for the role. In 2020 mama Connie hogged the headlines when it was announced that she was a lead actress in the new Mzansi Magic telenovela (Gomora), replacing Isithembiso.
