South African actor Sicelo Buthelezi, famous for playing the role of Teddy on Gomora, recently revealed that he bought a house in Fourways, Sandton. During his interview on Youtube platform Podcast and Chill with MacG and Sol Phenduka, Teddy detailed how he moved from Tembisa to Sandton.
The twenty-three-year-old actor revealed how his life changed when he bagged a role on Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora.
‘When you play a role of such a production, exposure and income will flow; that’s how I managed to secure the bond to purchase the house.”
Though his life has changed for good, Sicelo’s mother, a pensioner, refused to move with him and remained in Tembisa.
“She is comfortable living in her house in Tembisa; older people resist change, her friends and family are still back there; that’s why she didn’t move in with me.”
During the Podcast and Chill interview, Sicelo speaks about how his role model and mentor, legendary actor Warren Masemola helped him secure a role on Gomora.
“While I was still doing Theatre, Warren told me that Sereti Productions is conducting an open audition. He backed me to score a role; I auditioned for the Ntokozo role but ended up getting Teddy. To secure the role, I beat Sandile Mahlangu, who was big and already playing a role on Isithembiso at that time.”
On Gomora, the Teddy Buthelezi character is a son to Zodwa and Don; his father left when he was an infant to stay with a wealthy woman in Sandton. Teddy and his mother Zodwa live in Gomora Township in a shack. He was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, which caused him to be a slow learner. He was born and raised by an alcoholic who saw Teddy being adopted by Gladys Dlamini, a famous social worker in the Gomora community.
Teddy is friends with Glady’s son Ntokozo (Ntobeko Sishi) and tries by all means to avoid criminal life.
Sicelo expressed his gratitude to experienced cast members on Gomora who took their time to mentor rising stars.
“I’m grateful for playing on the same cast with Zolisa Xavula (Melusi Dlamini on Gomora); he is one actor who made so much impact in my craft. He is patient and willing to go an extra mile in guiding young actors; we grew up idolizing him now; having him on the same set is a dream come true.”
