No doubt he has fast become one of the worlds finest when it comes to smashing hits and setting clubs on fire. Of late, he has been winning big with his unmatched talent.
In recent years the celebrated DJ has been keeping his private life wraps, but it seems as if Mzansi has managed to connect the dots.
Well, let’s dive into Black Coffee inspiring life story. Born Nkosinathi Innocent Litiya Maphumulo is a celebrated South African musician and DJ born on 11 March 1976 in Umlazi, South Africa.
However, a few years later, he moved to Umtata, a town that happens to be 29 km away from the late South African Presidents Nelson Mandela in Qunu village.
Whilst celebrating the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, DJ Black Coffee was involved in a taxi accident that damaged his left arm.
DJ Black Coffee’s road to fame
However, upon matriculating, he pursued his craze for music by enrolling at the Durban University of Technology. At the institute, he majored in Jazz Studies. Fortune favours the bold. Like those before him, his thrust into the limelight came whilst he was young when he joined Madala Kunene as a backup vocalist.
From there, he went on to form an Afro-pop group with his schoolmates, the likes of Mnqobi Mdabe and Thandukwazi Sikhosana. However, the group was signed under Melt 2000.
In the mix of things, Coffee established his own record label Soulistic Music. In 2005 he made all sorts of headlines when he released his debut self-titled album Black Coffee. The album incorporated elements of Rnb and Jazz.
No doubt his illustrious career spans decades and has released nine studio albums. He became an international sensation when he participated in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy. In 2015 he won the “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” award at the DJ Awards in Ibiza.
Since then he has been winning big. However, in the wake of his newfound fame, he has seen himself trending for the wrong reasons of late.
From performing in dusty roads and open spaces to international tours the DJ has amassed a lot of wealth through his gigs. As of 2021 has an estimated net worth of R4.5 million. No doubt he is having his own fair share of fame.
