Imbewu: The Seed actress ‘MaNdlovu’ Thembi Mtshali-Jones was awarded an honorary Doctorate
Thembi is one of South Africa’s finest talents in the entertainment industry. Given that she has been in the acting industry since the 70s, her talent has not cracked yet. Her impact on the community and acting community has not gone unnoticed. She has been awarded a doctorate by one of the most prominent universities in the country.
On the 16th of May 2022, the actress was awarded her honorary at the virtual autumn graduation ceremony of Durban University of Technology. Thembi was conferred as an honorary Doctor of Philosophy of Visual and perfoming Arts. The actress, who has done almost everything entertainment-related, was deemed worthy of the honour.
In her speech, Thembi Mtshali Jones said she never thought that she might address a prestigious and learned crowd in her life. She thanked the people who mentioned her name in rooms, which led to her being honoured. She then shared her struggles with the systems in the country from her early years of life and career.

Mtshali debuted her career as a musician and made a name for herself with her vocal talents. She made albums in her name as a Jazz artist. This was before becoming the lead vocalist on Sipho Gumede band Peace and the African Jazz Pioneers. She states her favourite moment as a singer was when she sang the birthday song in Zulu to Nelson Mandela on his 80th birthday in Washington D.C. This was broadcasted live on CNN and is one of the iconic moments in her career.

When the City of Durban and the premier of KwaZulu Natal awarded her the Living Legend award, they precisely described this actress. She has been a producer, playwright, and director in her career. She is currently playing the role of MaNdlovu in Imbewu The Seed, which she has been holding since the show debuted.
