Media personality and celebrity chef Somizi Mhlongo has responded to Zimbabwe’s Council of Apostolic Churches and the ruling party Zanu PF’s youth after he was blocked from travelling to the Southern African country.
The churches grouping petitioned President Mnangagwa to intervene and stop the former Idols judge from gracing Zimbabwe with a visit because of his sexual orientation.
“I think some of you don’t know God. After my Zimbabwe trip was blocked, I got an invite, and I’m going to Namibia,’ Somizi said in a video.
He created another long video in which he poured his heart out after his failed Zimbabwe trip.
“Happy Thursday, everybody. I have sad news. I was supposed to go to Zimbabwe, and everything was correctly paid, and they started to say they wanted a refund because I did not post the event on my social media.
“Immediately that something was wrong, and I don’t usually post an event for free on my social media as it attracts an extra charge. So I made it clear that I did not have my phone,” Somizi said.
‘My job is to deliver what I’m booked for. I do not post to advertise their businesses; that is not my job.’
‘My suspicions were confirmed as some journalists called me to comment that I’m being stopped from going to Zimbabwe. So the fact of the matter is people in Zimbabwe do not want me to come based on my sexuality. They have made it clear. I do not care about it because this is not the first time it has happened to me,’ Somizi said.
The Ntandane singer says he will not be silenced over and will let his voice be heard in Africa despite being comfortable in his country.
‘I could say I don’t need to go anywhere as im comfortable in my country. We have the best consititution and i can happily live here. I’m not going to do that because there are people who are being oppressed in many African countries based on their sexuality. Zimbabwe, Nigeria. Just because i’m free it doesnt make me feel free as there others who are not free,’ Somizi said.
‘I’m not the reason why other people are homosexual, but i maybe the reason why others feel prouder to be homosexual.’
‘People don’t just wake up and say today i’m going to be homosexual, don’t get confused. You are born homosexual, or you are not born homosexual. Even if they don’t go, it will not change the sexuality of those people.’
‘I will not stop to speak about the voiceless. If I have to die fighting so be it. I love my African continent. What you are doing is the same as being racist,’ Somizi said.
