We have discussed issues to do with writing CVs. The next stop is about impressing in job interviews.
First impression
You don’t have a second chance to give a good first impression. Once you miss the opportunity, its gone. A good first impression gives you a head start in an interview. It affords you the chance to click with your interviewers. It helps you settle well and to be prepared for the questions that follow
How to make a good first impression
It begins with your appearance especially your dressing. Dressing well will make you comfortable throughout the interview. Enter the interview room and greet everyone with a smile. Show them you are comfortable and you are feeling like you are at home.
Dressing
Research about the company colours and wear them if it looks professional to do so. It psychologically make them feel like you are already part of the team. If their colours are too bright or distinctive, do not wear them because you need to remain professional. Please note: Wear their colours and not their uniform. If you do not have their colours it doesn’t matter, wear something professional and not very bright. A dark suit and white shirt are the most common.
Perfume
Do not use perfumes that can affect the interviewers. Roll-on only is usually okay on such a day. You need to avoid a situation where the interviewer becomes uncomfortable with the atmosphere around them because that is what they will remember about you.
Prepare well
There is nothing more important than gathering information about the interview. You need to be sure of what is expected of you. Study the job description to understand your role in the organization and the sphere of influence. Find out how big your span of control will be, and whom you report to.
Be eloquent
It is better to recite your answers than to stammer when asked to answer a question. Your choice of words must be professional and your voice projection should not be too high or too low.
