Hatfield couple arrested on possession of 6670kg of copper cables.
On the 28th of January in Hatfield, Harare a house was raided and 6670kg of burnt copper cables were recovered. The couple is in custody.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company has been alerting the public not to vandalize or steal power infrastructure. The recent increase in power cuts and load shedding is a result of serious vandalism.
The arrested suspects will appear in Court on the 29th of January 2021. As of yet no other suspects have been arrested. In 2020, ZETDC resorted to stiffer cable theft penalties. This is because vandalism and thefts costs the organization more than US$2 million annually.
On the 14th of January 2021, 185mm 4 Core SWA, twenty meter long cable was vandalized along Insurance road in Zimre Park, Harare.
In Marondera an armored cable which supplies Morningside with electricity was also vandalized.
