Harry Maguire has ended speculation regarding his future by signing a one-year contract extension at Manchester United, a deal that includes an option for an additional season.
The 33-year-old center-back, whose previous £190,000-a-week contract was set to expire this summer, has reportedly agreed to a significant wage reduction to remain at Old Trafford. The renewal marks a dramatic career turnaround for the veteran defender, who has transitioned from a peripheral figure under former manager Ruben Amorim to a vital component of Michael Carrick’s rising side.
Since Carrick took the helm, Maguire has become an ever-present fixture in a United defense currently battling for a Champions League spot. His domestic form earned him an England recall last month, where two friendly appearances placed him firmly in contention for Gareth Southgate’s upcoming World Cup squad.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honor,” Maguire said in a club statement. “I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons. You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad, and I am confident our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
United officials moved to secure Maguire’s services to retain veteran leadership within the dressing room, particularly following the confirmed departure of midfielder Casemiro this summer.
Maguire’s tenure at United has been defined by resilience. After joining for a record £80 million in 2019, he served as captain under Ole Gunnar Solskjær before being stripped of the armband and placed on the transfer list by Erik ten Hag in 2023.
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United,” said Director of Football Jason Wilcox. “He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience to our young squad.”
The announcement comes as the squad undergoes a warm-weather training camp in Dublin during a mid-season fixture gap. The contract news coincided with public backing for interim manager Michael Carrick. Forward Amad Diallo praised Carrick’s impact on Tuesday, urging the board to make his appointment permanent.
“He knows the club and has the DNA,” Amad stated. “We think he’s the right man.”
Maguire has made 266 appearances for the club to date, winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup during his seven-year stay.
