Soldiers Tell People To Leave Harare CBD In 10 Days
Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi says that he is not aware that soldiers and police are telling people to vacate Harare’s central business district in ten days.
This follows reports that soldiers and police were moving around in Zimbabwe’s capital telling people to vacate the CBD.
Ziyambi was answering a question in Parliament on Wednesday. He was responding to a question from Mbizo MP Settlement Chikwinya who wanted clarification on why soldiers were moving around in towns asking people to wind up their businesses within ten days.
Chikwinya said:
Hon. Minister, you explained the conditions of people who may want to go into urban areas as well as maintain the safety of people. My point of clarity is, since yesterday in towns such as Harare and Mutare, soldiers were moving around telling people to wind up their businesses within ten days. What sort of development is that?
This comes after Zimbabwe’s cabinet resolved to defer the reopening of schools and the further reopening of the economy. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted that he is considering tightening the country’s lockdown measures and restrictions.
Ziyambi tried to dodge the question but Chikwinya pressed further asking:
The question is to do with your concerns around COVID-19 which you have implored us Members of Parliament to be concerned with. Soldiers and police are warning people to vacate the CBD in ten days. What is that new development?
In response, Ziyambo said that he was unaware that soldiers were moving in Harare’s central business district (CBD) warning people to vacate in ten days.
He said that he would carry out further investigations into the matter and find out if the incident is really happening. Ziyambi said:
I would like to thank the Hon Member. I am hearing that case right now, so I will go and look into it to find out whether this is really happening.
