Soapie lovers will be excited to know that Giyani will be back on our screens for a second season later this year. The series which is Mzansi’s first Xitsonga series is back by popular demand as confirmed by entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela.
Unfortunately it’s not good news all around as the return of Giyani means the cutting down of Muvhango. Although the soapie has been here, Muvhango hasn’t been at its best, viewership wise. As such the soapie will be airing Monday to Wednesday at 9pm with Giyani coming in on Thursday and Friday at 9pm.
Muvhango is not the only SABC 2 soapie to be cut down as 7 de Laan will also be cut. 7 de Laan will also downgrade from 5 days a week to 3 days a week.
Giyani’s return is due to popular demand as fans created a petition for the return of the series. Clearly the show was a massive hit. The petition read,
“The drama has stolen the hearts of multitudes of South Africans and teaches other tribes the ways of the Tsonga, Venda, Mapedi and Balobedu-speaking people’s culture and their daily challenges. It has found a way to teach us to unite and acknowledge our differences as tribes.”
The show is produced by Tshedza Pictures and written by Phathutshedzo Makwarela and Gwydion Beyno. The show features some of Mzansi’s favourite faces that include Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Mutsila, Wiseman Zitha, and Candy Tsa Mandebele. The show was an immediate hit among viewers even for those whose languages do not include Xitsonga.
News of the return of the telenovela was warmly welcomed on Twitter with fans getting excited. The show was hailed for being accomodating to different cultures and for being a breath of fresh air. We all look forward to welcoming Giyani back to our screens this year.
