Gauteng Police to dispose 300,000 litres of alcohol confiscated during the lockdown
A stream of alcohol will flow down the drain as Gauteng police are set to dispose alcohol confiscated during the lockdown.
The majority of police storerooms in the region are parked to capacity with confiscated alcohol.
The police’s Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said the alcohol confiscated by the authorities can fill two swimming pools:
With regards to the branches, it is difficult for me to give an and value of liquor we have stored because they are different brands and different prices. As to the quantity, we have more than 300,000 litres of alcohol here. I was joking with my colleague here that we can fill in two domestic swimming pools with liquor.
While the confiscated alcohol varies in brand and mixtures, authorities say some of the alcohol is illegal and often sold to school children.
It differs from one suburb to another, one informal settlement to another. In the spaza shops, and in the townships you find this Nigerian liquor and it is in this country illegally. It is mostly used by youths and school children. They mix it with an energy drink and drink it and that is why they are misbehaving in schools.
As you can see here this is a Chinese one, I don’t even know what is written here but you also find it in the suburbs and China City. We also find imported liquor brought illegally into the country. Some of the alcohol sold in duty-free shops at the airport is also found in the shops, Mawela said.

According to SABC, the police said the operation will be continued and they will continue hitting hotspots ahead of the festive season.
