Gauteng Drunk driver who runs into police car arrested for possession of home-brewed beer
With the alcohol ban in South Africa, citizens are going to all lengths to stay intoxicated. All hell breaks loose for a 38 year old Gauteng driver who runs into a police car this Wednesday while under the influence. The traffic police officer sustains injuries in the accident as the drunk driver fails to follow instructions to stop.
Speaking on the incident which occurs in De Deur, the traffic police spokesperson Sello Merane comments:
“A member of Gauteng traffic police stops the vehicle after noticing that the vehicle has no registration plate in front. Allegedly, the driver intentionally and negligently fails to stop after an instruction to do so and in the process hits the legs of an officer.
“The officer sustains serious injuries and is receiving medical attention in a nearby health-care facility,” Maremane adds.

The police officers on patrol finally succeed to stop the driver. They charge him with intoxication after failing the alcohol test.
“Upon stopping the suspect, the officers screen him and find that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Homemade alcohol is also found in his possession. The detection from the breathalyser confirmed that the suspect was intoxicated at 0.79 milligram. This is three times over the prescribed legal limit of 0.24 milligram per 100 millilitres,” Maremane says.
Charged for driving while intoxicated and for failure to adhere to the police’s instructions, the driver is in police custody awaiting trial. The lockdown has seen alcohol sale being illegal in a bid to curb the spread of the virus. A few understand this enforced law and are in turn resorting to sinister means just to get hands on alcohol.
Speaking on the matter, Maremane adds,
“Incidents of nature will not to prevail under our watch. Officers of the law are to gain respect at all costs since they are there to protect and serve our communities.”
