Ever since the cast of the International movie, The Woman King started being publicised, we have seen a lot of talent from Mzansi joining the star-studded cast. Makgotso Monyemorathoe joins The Woman King, where she will work alongside International actress Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, John Boyega and Lashana Lynch. The film, which is set to be released in September 2022, has already started shooting in South Africa.

Makgotso M, as she is famously known, took to her Instagram story to announce and confirm that she will be joining the cast of The Woman King. The nature of her role in the Gina Prince-Bythewood movie has not yet been made public. However, the cast started filming on the 1st of November 2021 for the historical epic film. The idea for the movie has been developed since 2018, and the actors are working to bring the storyline to life.

The Woman King will be inspired by the events that took place in the Dahomey Kingdom, modern-day Benin. This was the African Kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries, among a few others. The actors’ mission is to portray the life of Nanisca and Nawi, who is a female military general and her recruit. The two will be on a mission to fight off the enemies that would have put their homes and villages into slavery. The two women will be brought to life by Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu, respectively.

The versatile South African actress has been known to slay all the roles that she lands in the industry. She made a name for herself in the acting industry when she landed the role of Kamogelo Tsotetsi, the troublesome younger sister of Lerato in Isidingo. She later played the shrewdly calculating Onika in the Venda SABC 2 series, Muvhango.

Makgotso’s first leading role in a Television series came in the former Mzansi Magic series Is’thunzi. She took on the part of Thishiwe, who is misunderstood in the community because of something dark that would have happened to her family. She worked alongside Thuso Mbedu on that series, and the two became friends from that time onwards. They get to work on an International movie production together again.
