A woman residing in Florida made an excess of $20,000 (R309,000) from selling her own breast milk to families with young babies.
The woman decided to venture into the business after she ended her six months period of breastfeeding her surrogate baby.
The enterprising woman gave birth to another couple’s baby and after six months she no longer needed to breastfeed, and she thot of marketing her own milk to make extra cents.

She managed to scoop two customers – families whose children were also born via surrogate and she has been supplying them with milk for around a year now.

said she received backlash from people who criticised her for charging breast milk but she says the process of milking herself, preserving and delivering the milk is equivalent of a full-time job.
She said her initial purpose was not to make money out of it but to help other families. She then resolved to make it worthwhile of her time and effort.
She says a lot of people expect the milk to be free, despite her investing time and resources in her venture.
“I spend hours a day hooked up to my pump daily which is time away from my family.”
She sells the milk at 90 cents per ounce and she has been able to make an impressive sum of money from her idea.

‘I wouldn’t go into the store and assume I can get the free formula, so it baffles me that people expect free breast milk,’ Julie said.
‘Even charging one dollar per ounce I get paid less than minimum wage once you add up all the time spent on it.
‘That’s not to include replacement of pump parts every six to eight weeks, the cost of bags, the cost of the sterilization units and four different pumps that I use.
‘It is a lot of work to exclusively pump and it is a labour of love,’ she added.
