etv gives Rhythm City cast life-changing bonuses after axing the show
etv pulled a shocker late last year in November when it canned it Rhythm City out of the blue. Well, the etv hit soapie is coming to an end after 13-years on air. However, eMedia Investments, the company owning etv channel is looking forward to remunerating Rhythm City actors and crew with farewell bonuses in the coming month.
The show was canned in November as “part of its business strategy” after running for 13 years. The shows the last episode is slated for 16 July this year.
The axing of the show came as surprise to the cast and crew rift between the showrunners and cast. Rumour has it that leading actors even threatened to dump the on the eleventh hour after the show cancellation.
However, it has been established that the showrunners have decided to showers their cast and crew members hefty bonuses as part of compensation. They have decided to pay up farewell bonuses, as per labour law.
The latest development was also confirmed by entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela. Mphela took it to Twitter to announce the latest development in regards to Rhythm City.
“In an unprecedented move in South African television industry, we have it on good authority, that eMedia investments, a company that owns the Etv channel will be remunerating the cast and crew of the show with some farewell bonuses.”

However, in the wake of its cancellation, etv indicated a new local drama series is set to replace the show this July. Little is known about the new show as of yet. etv has now 4 daily dramas that include, Durban Gen and Scandal!.
Before the announcement of its axing the show had witnessed a mass exodus of leading actors. The mass exodus of actors led to the sharp decline of viewers and many thought it was the reason behind the show’s cancellation.
In 2019 Simphiwe Mtshali left the show after 10 years. Rhythm City firebrand David Genaro and a host of other seasoned cast left the show for new gigs.
Samkelo Ndlovu played the feisty Lerato who left on good terms. Amo Chidi played musician Rene and she resigned a week after Samkelo announced her resignation and unlike her co-stars, she gave no reasons for her departure which prompted a lot of speculation.
