eNCA News crew robbed at gunpoint in Khayelitsha after doing a live crossing
The eNCA news crew were robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday afternoon shortly after doing a live crossing. The reporters were held up at gunpoint for their equipment while working in Khayelitsha.
Khayelitsha is a dispersed township outside of Cape Town and the unorganised expansion of the township has caused frequent protests about service delivery and uncontrolled housing. This week the issue was the terrible state of roads within the township.
eNCA went to the township to assess the situation and unfortunately robbers from there had other plans. Luckily no one was hurt during the robbery. On the other side this has negatively impacted the community as municipal workers and reporters are discouraged and frightened to go and help the communities.

Monique Mortlock a reporter was delivering an account to the camera moments before the robbery. According to her a local police officer whom they reported to did not serve an justice but seemed to delay the traumatic experience. Taking to Twitter Monique explains the experience.
“We were just robbed at gunpoint in Khayelitsha after doing a live crossing. Now my colleague and I have to deal with an incompetent police officer informing us that we cannot open a case at this station. The station is only two minutes away from the crime scene and apparently it does not lie within their jurisdiction.”
“And when I told the police officer that it happened just around the corner from his station, he told us not be on top of him. I tried to tell him that we were traumatised and want the issue sorted; he said he was also traumatised.”
“Neither of us was rude or irate. We were frustrated of course and when we told him we were journalists that is when he decided to take us to a higher ranking officer for assistance,” she posted.
