United States President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for Covid-19. He made the announcement this morning.
He becomes the highest-profile leader to have contracted the pandemic since its discovery in December 2019.
He took to Twitter to make the announcement:
Tonight, Melania and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!
Trump, who is known to dislike wearing a mask, will stay home for at least two weeks as he recovers from the pandemic.
The new set back is likely to reduce Trump’s momentum for the Presidential elections that are slated for the 3rd of November.Trump is seeking a second term in office.
The announcement comes after Trump has tweeted that one off his closest advisors, Hope Hicks, had tested positive for coronavirus.
Hicks travelled with Trump in helicopter Marine One as well as on Air Force One.
With Hicks having been in Trump’s close proximity, Trump went into self-isolation on the news that his advisor tested positive for Covid-19.
Ms Hicks had travelled with Mr Trump to the first presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday and to a campaign rally in Minnesota on Wednesday.
On Fox News, Trump appeared to suggest that Ms Hicks caught the virus after interacting with soldiers and law enforcement agents that would come up to her.
At 74, Donald Trump is at higher risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19.
