DJ Sbu hangs his gloves after two decades
After two decades on radio, DJ Sbu finally puts the mic down. The 90s babies can still clearly remember how he made TV worthwhile with the show Friends Like These. From breaking the record for the longest radio music show to publishing books and owning an energy drink brand, Sbu has done it all.
His career has come full circle and after two decades, DJ Sbu thinks its time for new adventures. Starting off at a community radio Tembisa Info Radio in 1998, he works his way up and gets to work with YFM, Metro FM and Massive Metro.

In a bid to nurture new talent, the award winning DJ is stepping behind the scenes to work his magic. “I didn’t think I’d go this far. I’m stepping away from the mic to focus on mentoring new talent,” he says. Sbu has the Midas touch and we can not wait for what is in store. Besides he has managed to host a non-top music radio program for 216 hours, anything is possible with Sbu.
“I wanted to go out with a big achievement and thought what a better way than a world record. We also used it to raise funds. We raised money for a homeless shelter in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni called Siyazigabisa Home of Hope. It was 216 hours on radio, which is about nine days of non-stop music radio. It was a challenging experience even though we had been practicing,” Sbu comments on his victory.
Giving us a sneak peek into some of his new projects, the DJ has this to say, “I will be exploring things I haven’t done in music before. I had a successful career but the era has changed. I did music before social media and the internet were bad. Now it’s a new generation and times. The first project is my album Home Coming: The African Odyssey, that I dropped two weeks ago.”
