Dineo Ranaka, a media personality, has revealed that she has a new outlook on mental health as she navigates through it. In late May, she shot up social media trends lists when she revealed that she was battling with suicidal thoughts. Since then, she has made headlines when she took a break from her duties at KayaFM and when her family assured fans that she was getting the help she needed.
Dineo’s Thoughts on Depression
On Sunday, Dineo took to Instagram to share her thoughts about depression based on her personal experience and research on the subject. She said that she believed she had been living with temporal lobe epilepsy, an enduring brain disorder that provokes seizures, since her mid-20s and that it had worsened over the years.
Dineo described her fear of experiencing seizures in her sleep and not waking up. She explained that it was not her body that went into a seizure, but her brain. In a series of posts, Dineo said that she believed depression had been thoroughly explained and that she was doing more research on the matter.
Dineo’s Personal Experience with Depression
Dineo described herself as a happy, fulfilled, high-functioning person with depression who was figuring herself out. She acknowledged that depression is often associated with sadness but explained that it is not the absence of happiness either. She stated that she was honestly not sad and had much to be glad about, excited for, and to look forward to. However, she has been diagnosed with severe chronic depression.
