His father, Antonio, played a large part in encouraging him in his career. Cardoso was at a variety of youth academies, including Jomo Cosmos (working with Roy Matthews and Jomo Sono), Orlando Pirates (Augusto Palacios) and BidBoys (Eric Tinkler). However, there were times when coaches did not see his talent, and they dropped him from academies. However, due to his father’s encouragement, he persevered. Tinkler even explained to Daniel, “You lack the qualities to play professional football.”
Daniel’s first professional match was in August 2012 in Goble Park Stadium. He then made his next big career move in 2014. Daniel became the Vice-captain of Bidvest Wits in 2014. Cardoso has also played for SuperSport United Juniors, Lusitano FC, University of Pretoria, Highlands Park, Robertsham Callies and Free State Stars. He then joined the Kaizer Chiefs on 31 May 2015.
