Daniel was born in Nigeria in the town of Nnewi. Despite his humble beginnings, he was a very smart and talented young boy with a passion for soccer. This led him to pursue a career in soccer as an adult.

CAREER
Akpeyi started his football career with Gabros International FC. He then moved to the first team in 2005. Afetr this he moved to Nasarawa United FC in 2007. In 2010 he then joined Heartland FC for the CAF Champions League campaign as the first choice. However after 4 years with Heartland rumors swelled that Akpeyi would be moving. Heartland initially denied the claims. Akpeyi eventually moved to rival club Warri Wolves.

Daniel Akpeyi suffered a concussion on Sunday against Wits. He is ruled out for the next two matches. The medical team will continue monitoring his recovery process.

Akpeyi did not stay too long with the Warri Wolves. Barely a year after he signed a deal with Chippa. He remained with Chippa for 4 years. Akpeyi then migrated to South Africa to play for the Chiefs in 2019.
International Career
Akpeyi’s initial away games were none playing games. He never saw any field time until 2015 against South Africa as a replacement for Vincent Enyeama. This led to his selection for the Nigeria 30 man provisional squad. This was for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Akpeyi was included in the teams final 23-man list to 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Khune Feud
As a fellow goalkeeper to the Kaizer Chiefs alongside Itumeleng Khune, they have always been pitted against each other. Beginning of 2020, there was a heated debate on who should be number 1 at Naturena. Akpeyi went on to address the naysayers publicly saying “In our goalkeeping department, we are all very close. It’s just unfortunate that people want to put me up against Khune. We are pushing each other and we are brothers,” Akpeyi told Sowetan. This dispelled the tension for a while.
In August 2020, Akpeyi suffered a concusion. This led to him being benched pending a full medical report deeming him fit to play. Fans went in a frenzy some claiming that it was a sign to bring back Khune. This ignited the tension once more. However due to the severity of the concussion, Akpeyi was then benched for the rest of the season. Despite this the goalie maintains that there is no rivalry. Khune is like a brother to him.
Philanthropy
Akpeyi founded the Daniel Akpeyi Children Empowerment Foundation abbreviated Dafec. The organization helps develop Africa by helping the less privileged children get quality education. During the Covid19 pandemic, Dafec reached out to people in Gauteng and Johannesburg to aid during the lock down.
