COSAFA rallies behind Patrice Motsepe on the CAF Presidency campaign
As the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency elections set for March 2021 approach, Mamelodi Sundowns owner, Patrice Motsepe has received huge backing from the powerful Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) region. The region met on Wednesday 27 January and decided to place their bets on the Billionaire club owner. Out of all the regions, the COSAFA region has the biggest voting block consisting of 14 member associations. Despite having two member associations opposed to the notion, Motsepe stands a great chance of replacing Ahmad Ahmad.
Motsepe rolled out his campaign trail after the announcement of his candidacy by SAFA on the 9th of November 2020. Yesterday, the 27th of January 2021, saw Motsepe being given the green light by FIFA, after former CAF president Ahmad Ahmad received a five-year ban from FIFA. He was found guilty of breaching four articles of the global ruling body’s ethics code. As a result of this latest development, three other candidates namely Augustin Senghor of Senegal, Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast and Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, remain in the race.
