Corruption Accused ANC Members Must Stepdown: Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa says members of the ANC who have been formally charged for corruption, must immediately step aside from all leadership positions.
Ramaphosa said the ANC is formally drawing the line between itself and corrupt members.
Ramaphosa was speaking during an ANC briefing discussing outcomes of the party’s National Executive Committee meeting.
He hinted that there has been an attack on him as the party’s president. Ramaphosa said the attacks will not divert his attention from the fight against corruption saying, “The NEC emphasized that what seems to be a choreographed campaign against the President will not distract the movement from undertaking and intensifying programme against corruption and State Capture as mandated by the 54th national conference. In this regard, we will also work with other sectors of society and the broader population to confront the scourge of corruption.”
He also said the ANC NEC resolved that members who are formally charged for corruption must stepdown.
“Also decided that cadres of the movement who are formally charged for corruption or other serious crimes must immediately step aside from all leadership positions in the ANC, legislatures or other government structures pending the finalisation of their cases. The officials as mandated will develop guidelines and procedures on implementation and the next NWC meeting will receive a progress report in this regard in terms of how this decision is being implemented,” Ramaphosa said.
The ANC went into their NEC meeting on the back of a scathing letter from former President Jacob Zuma – blasting his successor Cyril Ramaphosa.
The ANC National Executive Committee held a virtual special meeting on 28-30 August 2020, to take forward specific matters that included the following issues: the COVID-19 pandemic; the fight against corruption; progress on the economic reconstruction and recovery programme, gender-based violence, local government and the African agenda.
