Zimbabwe Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has left the country and has been airlifted to the Corona virus infested China. The Vice President has been unwell for a long time and he has been forced to go to a risky country during the time COVID-19 is claiming thousands of lives.
Presidential spokesperson George Charamba trivialized the incident and suggested that its is a routine checkup that Chiwenga is going to have.
“I can confirm that the vice president left for China for his medical check-up. Obviously, we can’t say how long that will take because that will depend on what experts say. But he is out of the country.”
The need to travel
It is highly unlikely that Chiwenga is going for a routine check up for the following reason: Corona Virus ha killed more people in China than any other country and has also infected more people in China. Noe with that in mind, it is better to stay in a low risk country with your illness if it is not life threatening. There is a high probability that Chiwenga’s illness is life threatening that he even risked contracting corona virus in China. Secondly, Corona Virus doesn’t discriminate based on wealth. Chiwenga is equally at risk of contracting corona virus as other citizens in China. Finally, the older you get the higher the chances of actually dying from COVID-19. Statistics reveal that older people especially those above 80 have bodies that are not strong enough to fend off the virus from replicating itself and suffocating them.
The retired general has been unwell for over a year. He spent almost half a year in China last year. He is believed to be suffering from cancer of the esophagus that was caused by poising. He also has visibly swollen hands and body. His complexion is lighter than usual.
Coup and Mnangagwa replacement theories
Due to lack of official communication from the government on matters relating to the health of government leaders, despite the fact that they are supposed to communicate, the public come up with their own theories, substantiated or not. A conspiracy that is making rounds is that Chiwenga has gone to negotiate with China to support the army’s proposal to remove President Mnangagwa.
The theory cannot be rubbished as history has taught Zimbabweans to pay attention to pointers that are thrown at them by these Zimbabwe political theorists.
History repeating itself?
Chiwenga went to China in November 2017 and in a few days after he ended in Zimbabwe, he masterminded the coup that removed Robert Mugabe who had presided over the country for 38 years. While in China, it is believed that contacted the important people who would support his move. The same can be argued to be transpiring.
