Tshepang Mohlomi playing Khathide on Uzalo
Khathide re-introduced on Uzalo as a familiar face, a prisoner whose family is known by MaMlambo (Gugu Gumede). MaMlambo had a brief conversation with Khathide, who revealed that he turned to crime to put food on the table; their conversation got interrupted by Detective Mondli, who dismissed her from prison cells.
Struggling to get on his feet and provide for himself after prison release, like a parasite, Khathide turns to MaMlambo for holy wash and food. MaMlambo desperately opened her house to the struggling ex-convict in a bid to take off crime life. Khathide’s life represents how South African prisoners are discriminated against and struggle to integrate into a society that created a “criminal record, no job rule”, making it hard for released prisoners to find jobs.
Out of desperation, he finds himself back in the criminal world; he becomes a distributor of a dangerous drug (red pill) that shakes the streets of KwaMashu. The Tuesday 14 December Teaser reveals that “Meanwhile Khathide floods the streets of KwaMashu with a new party drug.” The emergency and popularity of the red pill frustrate Detective Mondli, who gets determined to solve the problem from the root.
