Minority opposition party MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora has called on MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has to stop using the party name as he claims it belongs to them.
Mwonzora was speaking in a interview with local publication Daily News when he threatened he is going to claim the name at the right time.
“It is our name because the MDC Alliance is a group of political parties. We are the major political party in the alliance, they must stop using this name, they must look for another name. We will deal with this issue at the right time,” Mwonzora barked. Questions have been raised over Mwonzora’s integrity as he famously revealed in a 2018 interview hat the MDC Alliance is a stand alone party and it was registered to avoid legal hurdles. Such evidence has caused Zimbabweans to believe the lawyer cum politician is working with the Zanu PF government masquerading as an opposition politician.
Chamisa on the other hand is not phased by Mwonzora’s threats as he believes a name is not of significance but the issues affecting the people. “Some are afraid that we will lose the name MDC Alliance, the name has no significance, what is important is your agenda as Zimbabweans, and that is what we are going to be delivering, we have a strategy. Thank God, I am the captain. Thank God, I am in good shape, thank God I am seeing dearly and the vision is very dear of where we are going. We are already facing the future, we are already building livelihoods, and we are gathering people and strengthening the party. Don’t be shaken, be comfortable the ship is under control,” Chamisa on Sunday while addressing an e-rally.
Prior to Mwonzora’s threats, Thokozani Khupe’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni also warned the MDC Alliance that they are coming after the name during a press conference at Harvest House.

The Supreme court of Zimbabwe controversially ruled that the MDC-T return to its 2014 structures on 30 March this year, causing the recalling of MDC Alliance legislators by another the losing party. The MDC-T whose president garnered 45,000 votes in 2018 elections resurrected through the intervention of the security forces as they enforced the grabbing of MDC Alliance headquarters Harvest House during the national lockdown.
Meanwhile Mwonzora has accused Zimbabweans of seeking to derail their extra ordinary congress by declaring 31 July as a national day of protest against Zanu PF. Mwonzora has long been accused of being a Zanu PF agent.
