Burundi Elections Observers quarantined: Burundi is due to hold Presidential elections 11 days from today. The Burundi government has directed that all international elections observers arriving in the country will be subjected to 14 days mandatory quarantine, due to Covid-19
The Burundi election observers will not be able to observe the election as they will be at their quarantine facilities until two days after the election.
According to a letter seen by Savanna News the Burundi government will be strict in their implementation of the 14 days quarantine period. part of the letter read, “It is mandatory for all persons, whether Burundians, Residents in Burundi or East African Community Citizens, entering the Republic of Burundi, to respect the 14 days quarantine period.” The directive applies to very person including election observers.
In a move that has not gone well with the EAC, The Burundi government has given the EAC Secretariat an option to use delegates already Burundi as election observers to serve as the East African Community Technical Observation Mission during the election as they will not be mandated to observe the 14 day quarantine regulation.
According to the opposition parties contesting in Burundi Elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refused to avail the updates voters roll to the opposition parties and the opposition fear the elections will be rigged through made up numbers and ghost voters in the voters roll on election day.
Agathon Rwasa the leader of the main opposition CNL party spoke about the violence that his party is experiencing ahead of the 20 May 2020 elections. He will be facing the CNND-FDD party, led by presidential nominee Evariste Ndayishimiye. The CNND-FDD party is expected to win the elections as it enjoys freedom to campaign and provision of election campaign resources from the ruling overnment. Ndayishimiye is the handpicked successor of President Pierre Nkurunziza who has been president of the country for the last 15 years. His bid to contest for a third term sparked protests in the east African country causing the death of hundreds of people and displacing thousands. Burundi has denied entry to election observers from Western Countries.
