South African citizens who were working on a cruise ship in Japan have tested positive for the coronavirus, the Health Ministry spokesperson Lwazi Manzi confirmed
The Ministry claims that the department learnt of this three days ago.
“On 25 February 2020 we were informed by the Japanese authorities that two of these South Africans tested positive for COVID-19. They are currently being treated in Japan and the latest reports indicate they are currently asymptomatic,” Lwazi Manzi said.
It is one of the worst fears that South Africa had. What is comforting is that the cases were identified in Japan and not in the South Africa.
The two South Africans are among other 705 people on the ship who tested positive for the virus.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the evacuation of South Africans living in Wuhan province in China. He says evacuation is the best case scenario to ensure that there are no more South Africans infected by the deadly virus. However, Ramaphosa’s utterances did not go well with most South Africans as they believe the best practice is to leave them in China so that they do not infect others in South Africa mainland.
The mission of rescuing is going ahead as planned with the mission leaving South Africa to Wuhan City. The rescue mission has been necessitated by growing pressure from relatives of South Africans in Wuhan City. The President has succumbed to the pressure and is sending a mission from the military and health department to successfully rescue the citizens.
