Zimbabwe security forces are blocking roads that are leading to Harare city centre. Motorists and Zupco buses are being forced to make u-turns. Some motorists and passengers offering essential services are being allowed to pass. Soldiers and police officers have increased their presence in roads leading to Harare CBD.
It is still not clear as to the reasons for the blockage. Early indicators from sources indicate the government is averting a demonstration by MDC Alliance and lawyers over the arrest and detention of lawyer Thabani Mpofu.
Lawyers are believed to have planned a demonstration at the Rotten Row court over the charges against Mpofu. Opposition supporters are also believed to have planned to take advantage of the opportunity to protest over the government’s involvement in the courts’ forced change of MDC Alliance leadership.
Mpofu was arrested yesterday after he handed himself to the police following reports that his arrest was imminent. He is being charged with obstruction of justice.
