In 1976 while studying at University of Zululand for a BA degree in Public Administration and Psychology, he becomes involved in student activity. Blade begins to engage in protests including a food boycott and demonstrations against the award of an honorary doctorate.
Subsequent to graduating, he joins the Azanian Students’ Organisation (Azaso) which eventually broke away from the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), aligning itself with the Congress. This sees him familiarizing with the policy of the African National Congress (ANC) to which he starts getting access to underground ANC documents. It is during this time that he completes his Honors and master’s degrees.

Moving to Durban in 1982, he joins the Dambuza Youth Organisation. That same year, Nzimande does his internship in Industrial Psychology at Tongaat Hulett Sugar Ltd. Here, he meets Jay Naidoo and affiliates with unions, addressing union seminars on job grading and other issues. Two years later, he quits his job.
This sees him working as a lecturer at the Umlazi branch of the University of Zululand where he founded the Department of Industrial Psychology on that campus. Nzimande begins to work on educational issues in mid-1986 and also held clandestine Marxist study classes with the youth. In 1987, he joins the University of Natal, Durban to lecture in the Psychology Department.
