Embracing a New Role in ‘Nikiwe’
Mkhwane, who left ‘The River’ where he played the character Bukhosi, joined e.tv’s telenovela ‘Nikiwe’ in June, taking on the role of Mhlaba. Known for his portrayal of Samson in ‘Isibaya’, Mkhwane expressed his enthusiasm for his new role in ‘Nikiwe’ during an interview with The Citizen. He stated, “I am always excited when invited to do my work because that’s what I have mastered my entire life.”
Working with Young Actors
The theater legend also revealed his fondness for working with younger actors. He views them as a mirror to reflect on his craft and recalls how he once made mistakes similar to theirs.
Mkhwane’s latest character, Mhlaba, is described as a traditional man with a limited worldview who prioritizes his family above all else.

Criticism of the Industry
Having been in the acting industry for over 30 years, Mkhwane voiced criticism towards the South African government for their lack of support for actors. He expressed concern that the industry is now driven by celebrities who are more interested in modeling in front of the camera than acting.
Advocacy for Actor’s Rights
Mkhwane also highlighted the need for better protection and support for actors. He noted that during his time overseas, he observed strong equity laws that ensured artists were well taken care of.
According to TVSA, Mkhwane has had notable roles in other productions as well. He appeared in season one of ‘Uzalo’ as Melusi Mdletshe and portrayed the role of Samson Ndlovu from season one to eight in ‘Isibaya’.
