Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich staged a remarkable late-game turnaround on Saturday, erasing a two-goal deficit to defeat SC Freiburg 3-2. Lennart Karl’s 99th-minute winner secured three points for the visitors, maintaining their nine-point cushion at the top of the table.
Despite the absence of star striker Harry Kane, who missed the trip due to an ankle injury, Bayern dominated early possession. However, they struggled to convert control into goals, eventually falling behind to a disciplined Freiburg counter-press.
Substitute Lennart Karl scored a 99th-minute winner as league leaders Bayern Munich erased a two-goal deficit to stun SC Freiburg 3-2 at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday.
The dramatic turnaround, fuelled by a late brace from Tom Bischof, moves the record champions to 73 points, maintaining a nine-point cushion over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table with 10 matches remaining.
The hosts took control immediately following the interval. Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock in the 46th minute with a powerful 25-meter strike that beat Manuel Neuer.
Freiburg’s sustained pressure forced a second goal in the 71st minute. After Neuer failed to convincingly clear a corner from Jan-Niklas Beste, Lucas Höler capitalized on the chaos to double the lead.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany responded by introducing Michael Olise, Konrad Laimer, and Aleksandar Pavlovic.
The victory extends Bayern’s historic hex over Freiburg; the Black Forest club has now failed to defeat the record champions in 46 consecutive Bundesliga meetings.
Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster expressed frustration over his side’s late collapse.
“It is difficult to fault my team for the first 80 minutes,” Schuster said. “Of course, it does not feel good to let a lead slip, but the key is to keep going after conceding the equalizer, and we did not manage that.”
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund kept pace with a 2-0 win over Stuttgart, while Bayer Leverkusen triumphed in a nine-goal thriller, defeating Wolfsburg 6-3. RB Leipzig secured a 2-1 victory against Werder Bremen, and Mainz edged Hoffenheim 2-1. In the day’s draws, Heidenheim tied Monchengladbach 2-2, and Hamburger SV played out a 1-1 stalemate with Augsburg.
