Anga Makubalo, also known as Naakmusiq, is set to lead in the new romantic drama ‘Smart Casuals,’ a film that delves into the complexities of love and relationships amidst the vibrant setting of Johannesburg. This project is one of six to benefit from a collaborative fund by Netflix and the National Film and Video Foundation, aimed at supporting the film industry’s post-pandemic recovery and job creation.
Director Zwo Farisani aims to present a genuine portrayal of romance, steering clear of fairytale narratives. ‘Smart Casuals’ follows two couples on divergent journeys of love. Makubalo portrays Taki, a photographer who enjoys the freedom of casual dating until a chance encounter with Tumi challenges his views on commitment.
The film also follows Mahlatsi and Bheka, a couple with a long history, as they navigate the trials of making it to the altar. Shot entirely in Johannesburg, ‘Smart Casuals’ captures the essence of the city’s dynamic spirit and the possibility that it represents.
Joining Makubalo in the cast are Angela Sithole, Terrence Ngwila, Mandisa Constable, Nyaniso Dzedze, Nomsa Twala, and Kudzai Mureriwa, each bringing life to this authentic exploration of modern love.
