The ruling party ANC is saddened by the death of Western Cape Provincial secretary Songezo ” Madiba” Mjongile who succumbed to colon cancer and died on Thursday, they said in a statement.
ANC SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE THE UNTIMELY PASSING OF SONGEZO “MADIBA” MJONGILE
The African National Congress (ANC) is saddened to announce the untimely passing of Comrade Songezo Mjongile who was affectionately known by his clan name “Madiba”. The movement learned of his loss with such profound sadness.
Comrade Songezo passed on peacefully in the evening hours on Thursday, the 17th of September 2020, at his family home in Morningside: Johannesburg surrounded by his wife and loved ones.
Comrade Songezo Mjongile from an early age joined the masses of our people in the struggle against the oppressive apartheid regime. He became an activist in the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and was later elected its President.
He continued his life of activism in the ranks of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) rising through the ranks and elected to the National Executive and National Working Committees of the ANCYL.
Comrade Songezo, through his selfless and dedicated activism, went on to be elected as the Provincial Treasurer and later Provincial Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape.
Around the 29th August 2020, the ANC learnt that Cde Songezo had been diagnosed with Colon Cancer in April 2020 and amongst his last wishes was to contribute to the renewal of the ANC and the success of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR).
This was a reflection of the commitment Comrade Songezo had to the ANC, the Mass Democratic Movement (MOM) structures, and the broader society of South Africa.

Before his death, Songezo Mjongile revealed that he took chemotherapy treatment to stop the spread of cancer which didnt work and led to kidney failure and heart attack.
To all my friends and comrades I discovered in April that I suffer from Colon Cancer. Chemotherapy treatment didnt work instead side effects have led to 2incidents of kidney failure and mild heart attack. I survived with the grace of god. I am leaving my second lease of life and pray to god to give me power to raise my children and family.
