The government of Zimbabwe has announced the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act Chapter 10:27. The Act will no longer be law in Zimbabwe starting from 1 July 2020.
The announcement was made by Secretary for Information Nick Mangwana this evening.
The announcement comes after the government gazetted the Freedom of Information Bill in July 2019 which sought to repeal AIPPA.
State media at that time reported the Freedom of Information Bill sought to give effect to Section 62 of the Constitution which provides for the right to access to information as enshrined in the Declaration of Rights. The Bill was gazetted as part of the second republic’s efforts to allow freedom of expression.
The Freedom of Information Bill sets out the procedure of access to information held by public institutions or information held by any person, which is necessary for exercise or protection of a right. It also sets out considerations for making available on a voluntary basis by entities, certain categories of information thereby removing the need for formal requests for such information.
