A-list South African female celebs who have been scammed
Scamming has been there and governments have channelled a lot of resources to counter the trend which has become a big problem. Of late scammers have used celebrities ghost accounts to source funds from fans and those vulnerable. These global trends have not spared South Africa too.
No doubt the rich and famous have been duped many a time. The scam doesn’t have to be elaborate or a sophisticated system to net vast amounts of money.
No, it can easily be a person hacking your number and identity. However one can not talk about scamming scandals of all time without putting Zach Avery’s Ponzi scheme that swindled more than $600 million (R8.5 billion) from investors into the equation.
The latest trend is using a well-known person’s philanthropism against them. Some celebrities want to be viewed as philanthropists, as “do-gooders” by personally helping their fans for all to see. However, people are using this for their own benefit locally.

Boity Thulo
Recently Boity Thulo was scammed recently. It was established that one of her fans pinned a tweet asking for assistance. A Twitter handle by the name RichKatengzaza asked Boity for a donation to purchase a pair of size six school shoes for his brother. Despite being duped Boity quickly brushed off the story.
Bonang Matheba
However back then in 2019, a Twitter user @BetaneNditsheni was duped by a person who claimed to be Bonang. Well for heads up despite Bonang boasting around with more than 2 million followers on Facebook she rarely uses the app.
The catfisher told Nditsheni her “sister” was stuck on the highway, warning number two, and she could not purchase airtime from her app as the signal was “poor”, another warning. Honestly, why would Bonang ask for R100 given the fact that she has so many business investments under her watch?
Rebecca Malope
The gospel singer must have been singing Hamba Juba (Go Away Jaba) after someone hacked her phone and impersonated her. The person sent messages to people on her contact list saying she had been arrested for speeding and needed R3000 bail.
