Prime Video has announced that Trevor Noah will host its first South African Original series, LOL: Last One Laughing. The show will launch in South Africa and globally next year, featuring some of the best South African comedic talents.
In the series, 10 famous South African comedians and entertainers will compete to see who can keep a straight face while trying to make their opponents laugh. The winner will receive a grand prize of R1 million, donated to their chosen South African charity.
“I’m excited to be back home to host Prime Video’s first South African Original, LOL: Last One Laughing, and to have a chance to connect with my home audience,” said Trevor Noah. “I am equally delighted for the opportunity to be working alongside my fellow home-grown comedy stars on a show that not only entertains but gives back to the South African production and charity communities.”
Ned Mitchell, head of Africa and Middle East Originals at Prime Video, expressed his excitement about Trevor’s return to South Africa and the opportunity to showcase the country’s comedic talent. The LOL: Last One Laughing series is an adaptation of Prime Video’s global comedy franchise, produced in more than 20 countries and territories worldwide.
The LOL: Last One Laughing series is a fan-favourite format on Prime Video and has local versions in countries such as Canada, Japan, Mexico, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, India, and Spain. The show is hosted by local celebrities such as Jay Baruchel (Canada), Eugenio Derbez (Mexico), Fedez (Italy), Michael “Bully” Herbig (Germany), and Rebel Wilson (Australia).
The South African version of the show will be produced by Rapid Blue, a leading production house in South Africa known for producing reality and game shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Come Dine With Me, South Africa. Day Zero Productions will also produce the series.
LOL: Last One Laughing South Africa is set to launch on Prime Video in early 2024 and will join the platform’s selection of global Amazon Original and Exclusive series and movies.
