REVIEW | Gail Mabalane shines as an unexpected murderer in the suspenseful local crime drama Unseen
Ever wondered how ordinary people get caught up in criminal activities? Netflix’s latest African Original Unseen delves into one such story. Adapted from the Turkish series Fatma by Özgür Önurme, Gambit Films brings a uniquely South African twist to the six-part crime thriller. Follow Zenzi (Gail Mabalane) as she awaits her husband Max’s (Vuyo Dabula) release from a two-year prison sentence and supports herself through domestic work.
When Zenzi goes to pick up her husband, Max, from prison, she finds out he’s already been released. Her search for him leads her to the police, where she faces xenophobia and incompetence. She then takes matters into her own hands and visits Max’s associate Hendricks (Brendon Daniels), where she works as a cleaner. Hendricks is involved in criminal activity and urges Zenzi to find Max due to unfinished business. Zenzi steals a gun from Hendricks’ safe and sets off to meet his former partner Jackson Thom (Sherman Pharo). When Jackson threatens her, Zenzi shoots him. From there, things spiral out of control as Zenzi gets deeper into the criminal underworld and ends up on the run from both the police and criminals.

Leading lady Gail Mabalane delivers an authentic and raw performance in her latest role as Zenzi. Mabalane expertly portrays the many layers of Zenzi – a wife, mother, sister, and woman ‘unseen’ by society. Her nuanced performance keeps Zenzi grounded in reality, even as she becomes a killer. Each murder takes its toll on her conscience, making for a gripping and emotional journey. Don’t miss Mabalane’s powerful performance in this must-see film.
Speaking to news reporters, Gail said:
“To bring this character to life was a journey that I needed to go on. What’s been incredible about playing Zenzi is that it allowed me to go emotionally where I’ve never been before as an actor.”
Featuring a talented cast of well-known South African actors, this show explores thought-provoking societal themes. One standout theme is the invisibility of cleaners and domestic workers. The series challenges viewers to confront their perceptions of these essential workers. It also shines a light on the flaws in our criminal justice system. When innocent people die, the police struggle to solve the case. But when criminals start dying, they go all out to investigate. This gripping series will leave you questioning your moral compass.
